Stem changes can occur with verbs of -ar, -er and -ir verb endings, usually to make the verb present tense. That means that, in order to conjugate the verb, you have to add or change the vowels in the stem. Some verbs in the present tense in Spanish change their form when conjugated in the present participle. Some verbs on the list above are stem-changing verbs. Here is a list of Spanish stem-changing verbs O to UE: dormir (to sleep), contar (to count), costar (to cost), encontrar (to find/to meet), recordar (to remember), volar (to fly), volver (to return) and almorzar (to eat lunch). Spanish Present Participle Stem-changing Verbs. This only affects the second-person singular (DU) form and the third-person. ![]() Therefore, we must say “ Yo duermo” not “ Yo dormo” as it should be done if the verb were regular. A number of German verbs undergo a change in the stem vowel in the present tense. The letter O is found in DORM, so we must make a stem change from O to UE for all subject pronouns, except for VOS, VOSOTROS and NOSOTROS. A popular verb following this rule is DORMIR (to sleep), which can be divided into DORM (stem) and IR (ending). The first rule says that when the vowel O is found in the stem, then there must be a stem change from O to UE. Some people call these '1, 2, 3, 6 verbs' to help them remember that the stem only changes in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th forms of the verb. They will be modified for all the pronouns, except for the subject pronouns VOS, VOSOTROS and NOSOTROS.
